Madness? Insanitity? Stupidity? Or just FUN? "Soil ballast"

Click to view full size image

Well, here is the latest of "experiments". This one required one shot of moonshine, two beers and a 15 liter bucket with a variety of soil. I inserted two 10 gauge metal probes (left over from a political sign!), used two little 18 gauge wires with alligator clips and a cheesie little 18 gauge 2 prong cord. I took the shot of shine, moistened the soil (with water) and plugged in my overly tortured LOA F15T8 fixture who has had its ballast disconnected, replaced by a "seriesed" extension cord, which has allowed me to plug in Christmas lights (C7 and LED), a fan, a radio (did not work) and now this craziness. Lamp would not start on its own, so I "assisted" it by also plugging in a set of C7 Christmas lights (with only three lamps installed) until it fired. (The extension cord still has the three receptacles.) I think 240V would be the better way to strike this bad boy and run it at full power. That experiment may happen later. Does that require twice as much alcohol? LOL
Anyway, this thing ran for at least three hours, with no steam, popping, smoke or scares while I was testing my latest recycle center finds and cleaning up a very nice F40 two lamp F40 preheat fixture given from a friend.

And so the insanity of the ballast substitution continues...

Hmm... How about full of crap as a ballast substitution?

Pretty, please no more Chinese failure.

How 'bout a piece of meat?

Now that I think of it, who exactly started that thing? xD

I'm also known as Vince the fox.

I still use old lighting technology, it has absolutely no environmental impact, because my house is fed by hydroelectricity. ^_^

@RCM442, all I did was disconnect the "choke" ballast and move the "hot" wire to where the ballast's output wire was (at the lampholder), then cut the "hot" side of a 6 foot cheesie extension cord and wire the fixture in series with the extension cord, leaving the triple receptacle intact, as this is where you will plug in your "ballast". Here, I wired a 2 prong cord to two alligator clips and clamped them to metal rods, which i inserted in the bucket of moist soil.
The lampholders, lamp, starter (which is simply a glowbottle hardwired in) and switch are all factory original. I gotta tell ya, this starter and lamp are TOUGH, as they keep holding up to abuse!
@rjluna2, don't tempt me too much, as I do have pigs and chickens and that would be a TRUE organic ballast! LOL

@TiCoune66, don't know, but you started me on the recycle center finds, which I have scored BIG TIME on!

Oh Gosh John...Soil?

What a Dirty Ballast!

Personally i think that all Lamp Bans are idiotic, the idea of telling us we cant use this lamp type just cause its less efficent is highly communist in nature...really what good is it going to do?

LOL on this one!

Colored Flourescent's rule, there's nothing like a good F40T12/Red or  F40T12/Green or  F40T12/Blue lamp. Same goes for any Aquarium and/or Gro-Lux lamps.

You should try sticking it straight in the ground and seeing if it will light!
